Xiaomi has shown a working Xiaomi 18 Fold in public for the first time at IFA 2026 in Berlin. The phone folds inward along a wide screen, a shape the company calls a mid-fold because it sits between book-style and clamshell foldables. It is also the first flagship to carry Xiaomi's own XRING O3 chip, and the formal launch in China is set for September 7, 2026.
The Hardware Appears Inside a Very Large Booth
Xiaomi built its largest standalone overseas exhibition to date for this IFA, more than 3,300 square meters, and filled it with over 380 products spanning phones, home appliances, vehicles and AI. It is the company's Human x Car x Home concept brought across in one piece, and the European rollout of its Mijia smart home brand was presented on the same floor.
The 18 Fold made its first public appearance as a physical unit inside that space. Leaked photos had circulated for weeks, but this was the first chance to see the red body and the shape of the rear panel on real hardware. Lu Weibing, who leads the smartphone business at Xiaomi in China, had already published official renders on social media and announced the September 7 launch himself.
The First Flagship Built Around Xiaomi's Own XRING O3
The most consequential part of the 18 Fold is the chip inside it. Xiaomi announced XRING O3, its own 3nm-class SoC, in August, and the 18 Fold is the first flagship phone to use it. Few manufacturers develop their own SoC and put it into a top-tier handset, so this is the point where several years of internal work reaches an actual halo product.
Memory is new as well. The 18 Fold uses next-generation LPDDR6 memory from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) in China, with transfer speeds reported to reach 12,800Mbps. Capacity is said to go up to 16GB, though that figure and the rest of the configuration have not been formally confirmed.
Neither a Book nor a Clamshell
The cover display measures 5.38 inches and the inner display 7.58 inches. Where a typical book-style foldable opens into a tall panel of around 8 inches, the 18 Fold is wide and short, closer to the proportions of a passport. Xiaomi calls this a mid-fold precisely because it aims at the space between the large-canvas book design and the pocketable clamshell.
Xiaomi did not arrive at this idea alone. SAMSUNG reached the market first with a wide foldable in the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and HUAWEI's Pura X Max uses a similar shape. Apple's first folding iPhone is also expected to fold along the wide axis, which places the 18 Fold squarely inside that trend.
The hinge uses a new generation of Xiaomi's dragon bone structure, which the company describes as combining a water-drop crease profile, a three-stage linkage and a frame that protects the panel edge to edge. Crease behavior and durability are the usual weak points of a foldable, and Xiaomi is addressing both directly.
Three Cameras, With Leica on the Bar
A wide bar on the back holds three cameras and an LED flash. Leica branding appears on the bar, so the lens collaboration that has run through recent Xiaomi flagships continues here. Markings on the bar suggest coverage from 17mm to 80mm equivalent, which puts the telephoto at roughly 3.3x. Reports point to a 200-megapixel-class sensor as well, but Xiaomi has not confirmed that.
Several outlets also list a 6,000mAh battery and IP68 dust and water resistance. Neither is a settled specification at this stage. Pricing, availability and a complete spec sheet all wait for the September 7 event in China. Nothing has been said about markets outside China as of this writing.
Summary
The 18 Fold shows where Xiaomi stands on two fronts at once: putting its own SoC into a mainstream foldable, and choosing a wide shape that is neither book nor clamshell. The IFA showing is a preview. What the phone is actually worth becomes clear only after September 7, when the price and the full specifications arrive, and that is also when the wide format has to prove it is genuinely easier to live with.
