BOOX, the ePaper device maker, has announced three new models running Android 16 at once: the palm-sized Palma 3, the 10.3-inch color ePaper Note Air6 C, and the one-hand-friendly 8.52-inch color Note Mini C. All three ship with the Google Play Store preinstalled, a fingerprint reader built into the power button, and a microSD slot. On the US official store, the Palma 3 starts at 319.99 USD (about 50,000 yen), while the Note Air6 C and Note Mini C each start at 549.99 USD (about 85,000 yen). As of this writing, only the Note Air6 C can be purchased; the other two are listed as "available soon."
Palma 3: 6.13-inch monochrome ePaper with a 16MP camera and 3,950mAh battery
The Palma 3 is the latest in BOOX's smartphone-sized line built specifically for reading e-books. It uses a 6.13-inch HD ePaper display with a resolution of 824 x 1,648 and a pixel density of 300 ppi. Rather than color, it sticks to black-and-white, and BOOX describes the product with phrases such as "quiet by design" and "for low-stimulation living."
Inside, an octa-core CPU is paired with BOOX's own ghosting-reduction technology, BSR (BOOX Super Refresh), along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Capacity can be expanded with a microSD card. Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 6.0, and the front light can be switched between warm and cool tones. An accelerometer handles automatic screen rotation, and there is also an ambient light sensor.
Unusually for a reading device, it carries a 16MP rear camera with an LED flash, intended for scanning documents. The body houses a speaker and dual microphones, and the USB-C port supports OTG and audio output in addition to charging. Battery capacity is 3,950mAh, the body measures 159 x 78 x 7.8 mm, and it weighs about 195 g. The buttons consist of a power button with fingerprint recognition, volume buttons that double as page-turn keys, and a smart button that can be assigned a function.
Whereas previous models used plastic housings, several overseas outlets report that the Palma 3 has moved to an aluminum frame. It is also said to support the separately sold InkSense Plus stylus, allowing you to annotate e-books and jot down notes. It comes in two colors, black and white.
Note Air6 C: 40% faster than its predecessor, a 10.3-inch color ePaper notebook
The Note Air6 C is a notebook device with a 10.3-inch Kaleido 3 color ePaper screen. It displays 4,096 colors, with a resolution of 2,480 x 1,860 (300 ppi) in black-and-white and 1,240 x 930 (150 ppi) in color. The bundled Pen3 stylus supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, and the screen surface has a textured finish for a paper-like writing feel.
The main differences from the previous Note Air5 C are processing performance and the OS. According to BOOX, a new octa-core CPU built on a 4 nm process makes opening large documents and turning pages 40 percent faster. Core specifications such as 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 3,700mAh battery, 5.8 mm thickness and a weight of about 440 g carry over from the previous generation, while the OS moves from Android 15 to Android 16 and Bluetooth is updated to Bluetooth 6.0. microSD cards up to 2TB are supported.
On the software side, the latest firmware enables Dual Notes, which places two notebooks side by side in a split screen; Talk Insights, which records meetings and lectures and produces transcripts and summaries; and Smooth Mode, which reduces display lag in third-party apps. Talk Insights is limited in supported regions and languages, but the official site lists Japan and Japanese among them. Integration with external services such as Google Drive, Readwise and Zotero is available, along with 10GB of free cloud storage.
Optional accessories include a magnetic keyboard cover that connects via pogo pins (109.99 USD, about 17,000 yen) and a magnetic protective case that doubles as a stand (50.99 USD, about 7,900 yen). The keyboard cover has its own USB-C port, so the device can be charged while attached.
Note Mini C: a one-hand 8.52-inch model, also in color
The Note Mini C packs the functionality of the Note Air6 C into a smaller 8.52-inch body. The screen is likewise Kaleido 3 color ePaper, with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 (300 ppi) in black-and-white and 1,024 x 768 (150 ppi) in color. The bundled stylus is the InkSight, which also supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity.
The CPU, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, Bluetooth 6.0, warm/cool front light, fingerprint-enabled power button and dual speakers are nearly identical to the Note Air6 C. The battery is 3,150mAh, the body measures 187.7 x 156 x 6 mm, and it weighs about 300 g. It does not support a keyboard cover like the Note Air6 C, but it is positioned for reading and writing held in one hand while on the move. Pricing starts at 549.99 USD, the same as the Note Air6 C, and the release timing is only described as "soon."
All three models run Android 16 and let you add third-party apps from the Google Play Store. Not being tied to a single proprietary app has long been a hallmark of the BOOX lineup, and being able to use the latest Android from day one is reassuring for long-term use. Release timing and pricing for Japan could not be confirmed as of this writing. BOOX products have a track record of being sold in Japan through authorized distributors, so further announcements are worth watching.
