Sharp Launches SIM-Free AQUOS wish6 (SH-M36) on September 17 at 49,940 Yen with a Personal Safety Alarm

Sharp has added an open-market model, the SH-M36, to its basic AQUOS wish6 smartphone line. Rollout begins on September 17, 2026, and the price at Sharp's official COCORO STORE is 49,940 yen including tax. Peak display brightness is roughly double that of the previous generation, and the phone ships with a personal safety alarm and a set of anti-fraud calling features, aiming for a balance between price and equipment.

Bright Enough for Outdoor Use, with 120Hz

The display is a 6.6-inch HD+ LCD panel at 720 by 1,612 dots. The number worth noting is peak brightness: about 1,000 nits when Outdoor View is active. That is roughly twice the figure of the previous AQUOS wish5, and it directly addresses a common complaint about entry-level phones, where the screen washes out in direct sunlight.

The refresh rate goes up to 120Hz. Resolution stays at HD+, so anyone chasing pixel density will find it limited, but Sharp clearly prioritized the parts users actually feel, such as smooth scrolling and fast-moving video.

Resistant to Bending, and Washable

The chassis uses a three-piece structure of front glass, frame, and back panel. Metal is built into the frame, raising bending strength by about 20 percent over the AQUOS wish5 while keeping the body slim. It measures roughly 165 by 76 by 8.3mm and weighs about 189g.

Water resistance covers IPX5, IPX8, and IPX9, with IP6X dust protection. Sharp also ran the 18 test items of the US Department of Defense MIL-STD-810H standard, including a drop test onto concrete from 1.22m in 26 directions. On top of that, the phone tolerates washing with household foam hand soap and wiping with 70 percent ethanol. Being able to clean a phone matters for family use and for carrying it around a worksite.

The back panel has a fine textured finish that resists fingerprints and gives it a matte feel. The design was supervised by miyake design, the studio founded by Kazunari Miyake. Colors are Sora, Kinu, and Sumi.

The battery is 5,000mAh, paired with Sharp's Intelligent Charge control that reduces stress on the cell while charging.

Safety Alarm and International Call Blocking

Safety features are the centerpiece of this generation. Shaking the phone triggers a loud alarm and automatically places a call to a pre-registered emergency contact, up to three of them, while also sending an SMS containing location data. Both require setup in advance, but the fact that they launch without any screen interaction is what makes them usable in an emergency.

On the calling side, AI analyzes conversation content against past special-fraud cases and warns the user when a call looks suspicious. An International Call Block feature restricts incoming calls from overseas and outgoing calls to overseas numbers as a countermeasure against international phone scams. According to Sharp, this is a first for the AQUOS wish series. When a call goes unanswered, a Phone Assistant feature uses AI to transcribe the message automatically.

The rear camera is about 50.1 megapixels at F1.8 and the front camera about 8 megapixels at F2.0. A Document Capture mode removes shadows cast onto documents, menus, or notices and corrects the keystone distortion that appears when shooting at an angle.

Built to Last

The phone runs Android 16. Sharp plans up to two OS upgrades from the launch date and four years of security updates, which is a long support window for an entry-level device.

The chipset is a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. RAM can be extended by up to 4GB through virtual memory. It supports microSDXC cards up to 2TB and a 3.5mm headphone jack, along with Osaifu-Keitai and NFC, fingerprint recognition, and face recognition that works with a mask. SIM support is a nanoSIM plus eSIM DSDV setup.

Wi-Fi, on the other hand, tops out at IEEE802.11a/b/g/n/ac, with no Wi-Fi 6 support. That is one of the compromises made to hold the price down, and it is worth checking before buying.

Font choices include the legibility-focused Tazugane Gothic Info and UD Gakusan Maru Gothic. There is also a Simple mode with large icons and text, and a Junior mode that lets guardians manage which apps can be used.

Alongside the launch, Sharp begins offering a dedicated protection plan, Mobile Hosho Pack Plus for AQUOS wish6, on September 17. It costs 385 yen per month, or 6,600 yen paid upfront for two years. The two-year plan assumes the full term and offers no refund for early cancellation.

Coverage includes repairs for natural failures, plus device replacement for water damage, physical damage, theft, and loss. Repairs are handled by Sharp service counters and also by iCracked Store, a Sharp-certified mobile repair shop. Subscribers can use same-day repairs at iCracked Store, completed in as little as 60 minutes with genuine parts, at the covered price. Repairs that fall under the manufacturer warranty within the first year are excluded from the same-day service.

After one year of coverage, a device whose battery health is rated as degraded is eligible for one free battery replacement during the contract period. In a price bracket where battery wear is a common reason to replace a phone, that condition carries real weight.
