Google has announced the Google Pixel Watch 5, its latest smartwatch. It goes on sale in Japan on August 20, with Google Store pricing starting at 62,800 yen for the 41mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model. A rebuilt internal platform makes the watch 20 percent faster than the previous generation, and a new set of Health Guardian features summarizes vascular and metabolic stress as monthly trends, shifting the focus from daily readings toward catching early signals.

New silicon inside, 20 percent faster

The watch runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor paired with a power-efficient dual-chip architecture. RAM is up 50 percent over the previous generation and CPU performance improves by 12 percent, adding up to overall operation that is 20 percent faster. That headroom goes into on-device AI processing and smoother scrolling.

The clearest payoff is raising your wrist to talk to Gemini. Starting a workout, setting a timer, or pulling up a reservation buried in Gmail all run locally, so there is no waiting even when you are offline.

The way information surfaces also moves from reactive to proactive. At a Glance, which Google says is coming soon, pushes context-aware updates to the watch face before you ask: a live boarding pass as you walk into the airport, or the number of stops left on your commute. Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions, also rolling out later, can locate a plan in your calendar when someone asks about it and put the detail on your wrist, with a double pinch gesture taking you from confirmation to sending.

GPS built on Google Maps technology

Location accuracy is what Google leads with on Pixel Watch 5. The watch traces satellite ray paths through the 3D building models behind Google Maps, then pulls in data from a global network of weather reference stations in real time to correct for atmospheric conditions. In reflective environments such as dense city blocks, Google says route tracking is twice as accurate as the previous generation.

Google also says an internal study conducted in July 2026 put the watch ahead of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. Urban running and covered hiking trails, the situations where GPS traces have historically wandered, are the main targets.

Health Guardian tracks trends, not readings

The notable design choice in this round of health features is that they report a month of movement rather than a single day's number. Blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, and motion data from multiple sensors run through health foundation models trained on an enormous volume of real sensor readings, producing three monthly trend summaries: vascular stress, metabolic stress, and sleep breathing quality. The first report arrives after one month of wear, and Google says the feature will roll out gradually after launch.

On the safety side, the watch adds an industry-first breathing emergency detection feature. PPG, accelerometer, and barometer sensors work with on-device AI to watch for severe, sustained drops in oxygen saturation. If a breathing emergency is detected and the wearer is unresponsive, the watch can automatically contact emergency services and transmit the wearer's location. This feature launches first in Europe.

None of this amounts to a medical diagnosis. Google states plainly that vascular and metabolic stress trends are not prescreeners for hypertension or diabetes and must not be used to adjust medication or treatment plans. If a number concerns you, the next stop is a healthcare professional.

Sleep and training get finer-grained

Sleep stage detection is 15 percent more accurate. Bedtime automations, such as pausing an audiobook when you drift off, and a dedicated bedtime watch face are new as well. In the morning, Smart Wake monitors heart rate and movement during the 30 minutes before your alarm and wakes you during a lighter phase of sleep.

For training, step-by-step strength workout guidance on the wrist is coming later. Google Health Coach builds routines around your goals and factors in recovery signals like sleep and heart rate variability, suggesting swaps such as trading an outdoor run for indoor yoga on a scorching afternoon. These features require a Google Health Premium subscription, and Pixel Watch 5 buyers get three months included.

Priced from 62,800 yen, on shelves August 20

Google Store pricing in Japan is 62,800 yen for the 41mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model, 79,800 yen for the 41mm LTE model, 67,800 yen for the 45mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model, and 84,800 yen for the 45mm LTE model. Pre-orders opened on August 12, and the watch reaches shelves on August 20.

The display is a domed Actua 360 panel with 3,000 nits of peak brightness, covered in Gorilla Glass. Battery life runs up to 30 hours on the 41mm and up to 40 hours on the 45mm, with fast charging via the in-box USB-C quick charge dock and a 30W adapter, sold separately. The watch carries IP68 dust and water resistance plus 50-meter (5 ATM) water resistance.

Colors are Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon, the last exclusive to the 41mm size. Olive pairs with a new Pyrite housing finish. A Stephen Curry Special Edition is available in the 45mm size.

Connectivity covers Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz), and UWB, and NFC plus FeliCa support means Osaifu-Keitai payments work straight from the wrist. The watch pairs with smartphones running Android 12.0 or later, and Wear OS 7.0 simplifies moving watch data when you change phones.

As a launch promotion running through September 4, trading in an eligible smartwatch and applying Google Store points brings the effective saving to as much as 31,000 yen. That breaks down into 5,200 yen in store credit toward a future purchase and up to 25,800 yen for the trade-in.

Summary

The Google Pixel Watch 5 combines the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor and a dual-chip architecture for 20 percent faster operation, and applies Google Maps technology to deliver twice the route accuracy of the previous generation. The Health Guardian features that report vascular and metabolic stress as monthly trends, along with industry-first breathing emergency detection, push the watch toward rewarding long-term wear. It reaches Japan on August 20, starting at 62,800 yen.
