Google has begun rolling out a new capability that lets Gemini, its AI assistant, diagnose and fix formula errors in Google Sheets with a single click. When a formula returns an error, you can trigger the fix from the affected cell, and Gemini reads the surrounding data structure, explains what went wrong in plain language, and then supplies a corrected formula. The aim is to make untangling formula problems approachable even without specialized spreadsheet knowledge.

From the error cell to an explanation and a fix in one click

The flow is simple. When a formula fails to calculate and a cell shows an error, you move your cursor over it and choose the Fix option that appears. A side panel opens, and Gemini analyzes the layout of the surrounding data and the cell ranges your formula references to figure out what is wrong.

Gemini first explains where the problem lies in easy-to-understand terms. It then proposes a corrected formula and, once it is ready, applies the fix to the cell automatically. Until now, formula errors often meant tedious detective work: looking up what an error code means, or checking referenced cells one by one. The new feature replaces that effort with a short, conversational exchange, combining root-cause analysis and correction into a single action.

From simple arithmetic to complex formulas

The feature covers a wide range of formulas, from simple ones such as basic arithmetic to intricate calculations that combine multiple functions. Because it reads the surrounding data structure to interpret the cause, it goes beyond flagging syntax mistakes and digs into errors rooted in reference ranges or the shape of the data.

Spreadsheets are used for everything from business reporting to personal budgeting, but the more complex a formula becomes, the harder its errors are to track down. Fixing formulas is one of the more time-consuming parts of working with spreadsheets, and that is exactly the burden Gemini takes on.

A gradual rollout, eligible plans, and requirements

The rollout began on June 22, 2026. It is gradual: across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, it may take up to 15 days for the feature to become visible.

The feature is available on the business-oriented Business Standard and Plus and Enterprise Standard and Plus plans, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra for consumers, Google AI Pro for Education, and the AI Expanded Access add-on. On the admin side, it is available by default when Gemini for Workspace in Sheets is enabled, while end users need to turn on Workspace smart features to take advantage of Gemini.

In addition, through July 15, 2026, Workspace customers receive promotional access to higher usage limits so they can try out this improved Gemini experience. After July 15, per-user usage limits will apply.
