Chinese chipmaker Zhaoxin presented its entire ZX86 family of in-house x86 CPUs at MWC Shanghai 2026, held from June 24 to 26 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre[1]. The booth centered on the KaiXian KX-7000 for desktops and the flagship KaiSheng KH-50000 for servers, rounded out by a dedicated cloud stack, chip-level security, and GPU virtualization solutions, with a clear pitch toward domestic computing for the telecom and broadcast sectors. It was a useful snapshot of how close a homegrown x86 that does not depend on AMD or Intel has come to practical deployment.
Flagship Server CPU KH-50000 Tops Out at 96 Cores
The star of the show was the KH-50000 flagship server processor. Built on an in-house microarchitecture and a chiplet design, a single processor packs up to 96 cores and 384MB of L3 cache[1][2]. Base clocks are 2.2/2.6GHz, with a maximum operating frequency of 3.0GHz[2].
A chiplet design splits a CPU into several smaller dies packaged together, an approach also used in AMD's EPYC line. It makes it easier to scale core counts while maintaining yields, and it is what lets the KH-50000 reach such high core counts[3].
The I/O has been heavily updated as well. The chip supports 12-channel DDR5 memory for up to 3TB of capacity, and offers 128 lanes of PCIe 5.0/ZPI/CXL. It is compatible with x86 32/64-bit instructions and SSE4.2/AVX/AVX2 extensions, and adds acceleration instructions for China's national cryptographic standards SM2, SM3, and SM4[2][3].
Thanks to the new in-house ZPI 5.0 interconnect, the KH-50000 supports two- and four-socket configurations. A four-socket build can reach up to 384 cores in a single machine, a spec clearly aimed at overseas mainstream server CPUs such as AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon[2][3].
Partner Servers Gathered in One Place
The KH-50000 was shown not just as a standalone chip but built into partners' server products, which was a highlight of the event. The floor featured Lenovo's Kaitian KR722z G3, ZTE's 2U2S general-purpose server, and Yingzheng's CS5280Z3 series that scales up to 192 cores, among other domestic high-performance servers and workstations using the KH-50000[1].
The use cases span AI training and inference, general-purpose computing, and high-density storage, configured with adoption in mind for telecom carriers' core clouds and data centers. It signals that domestic CPUs are moving from "it works" to "it ships as a product."
From Cloud Terminals to Security and GPU Virtualization
Areas beyond servers were well represented too. Five cloud notebook terminals based on the ZX86 platform were on display, including Lenovo Kaitian's X5Z, X1, and N8 Pro, ranging from lightweight to high-performance models[1].
On security, in addition to the hardware support for the national cryptographic algorithms noted above, Zhaoxin says it implements full memory encryption, secure boot, and trusted computing at the chip level[1]. For the cloud, it also showed a GPU virtualization solution pairing a dual KH-50000 server with two Moore Threads S3000 GPUs, flexibly partitioning physical GPUs for allocation[1].
Cooperation with telecom carriers is concrete. Together with China Mobile and others, Zhaoxin built a dedicated cloud platform on the scale of 6,400 cores with the KH-50000 at its core, and it also showed work with China Telecom's "Tianyi Cloud" on optimization with that carrier's OS under an "AI plus security" theme[1].
Summary
Zhaoxin's MWC Shanghai 2026 showing stood out for bringing servers, cloud terminals, security, and GPU virtualization together end to end under a single in-house instruction set, ZX86, anchored by the KH-50000 flagship CPU. The company touts a philosophy it describes as "self-controlled but not closed, compatible with the mainstream but not dependent on it," advancing its own path while keeping x86 compatibility[1]. How far it can close the performance gap with overseas players remains the thing to watch, but the depth of its products and ecosystem is clearly growing.
