Xiaomi has announced the Mijia Desktop Photo Printer 2, a new home photo printer that lets you print pictures on the spot, in China. Crowdfunding begins on the company's Youpin platform on July 13, with the printer itself priced at 699 yuan (about 17,000 yen). The device refreshes the Mijia Photo Printer 1S from 2020 after roughly six years, with two major upgrades: the printing method and wireless connectivity.
From 3 Colors to 4, With Deeper Blacks
The biggest change this time is the printing technology. While the earlier 1S used a 3-color dye sublimation (thermal dye transfer) process based on the three primary colors, the new model adds a dedicated black (K) layer for a 4-color dye sublimation process. Because black ink can be laid down independently, text edges come out crisper and dark areas sink into a deeper black. The benefit is easy to see not only in photos but also when printing cards or collages that contain text.
Paper support has expanded as well. The printer handles 4-inch double-sided photo paper, adhesive square sticker paper, and 6-inch sheets, and for the 6-inch size you can now choose a higher-quality 4-color print option in addition to the traditional 3-color one. Per-sheet costs are modest, at around 2.48 yuan (about 60 yen) for a 6-inch 4-color sheet and under 1 yuan for a 4-inch double-sided sheet, making everyday printing easy on the wallet. The 1S only supported square sticker paper and 6-inch sheets and offered no 4-color printing at all, so the new model is more versatile too.
Wi-Fi Gives Way to Bluetooth 5.2 for a Direct Phone Connection
The wireless setup has also been rethought. Whereas the 1S relied on a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection, the new model switches to Bluetooth 5.2. That means you can pair directly with a smartphone and print without a home Wi-Fi network. Being usable even where a network is hard to arrange, such as when you are out or have guests over, is a practical touch.
The printer still lets multiple users connect at once to share printing, which suits scenarios like everyone printing photos together right after they are taken. For quick pre-print tweaks, 8 filters are available.
New Software Features Such as AR and Smart ID Photos
On the software side, the printer adds several features the 1S lacked: LUT-based color adjustment for fine-tuning tones, AR dynamic photos that let printed pictures play back as video through the app, and a smart ID photo mode that cleans up passport-style shots. For finishing, the printer supports several textured lamination options in addition to the earlier high-gloss coating.
The body measures 199 x 126.6 x 85.7mm, slightly larger than the 1S at 194 x 124.6 x 83.6mm. It still stays compact for a desktop printer meant to sit in one place.
Price and Availability
The Mijia Desktop Photo Printer 2 costs 699 yuan (about 17,000 yen) and will be offered through Youpin crowdfunding starting July 13. Consumables such as paper are sold separately, with a 4-inch double-sided photo paper starter set starting at 79.2 yuan (about 1,900 yen), alongside 3-inch sticker paper, 6-inch paper, and a professional 6-inch 4-color print set that will roll out in turn. For now the launch is centered on the Chinese market, and availability in overseas markets, including Japan, has not been announced.
*Converted at about 23.85 JPY to 1 CNY (as of July 10, 2026).
Summary
The Mijia Desktop Photo Printer 2 sharpens black reproduction and text detail by moving from 3-color to 4-color dye sublimation, and adds the convenience of a direct smartphone link by switching from Wi-Fi to Bluetooth 5.2. Playful extras like AR dynamic photos and a smart ID photo mode, plus the 699 yuan (about 17,000 yen) price, make it an approachable option for anyone who wants to casually keep printed photos at home. Whether news of an overseas rollout appears next will be worth watching.
