OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for small business, a program built to help small companies put ChatGPT to work[1]. It bundles virtual webinars, in-person events across the US, ready-to-use guides, and partner-built skills and offers from companies such as Dropbox and Shopify. At the center of it sits ChatGPT Work, the agent OpenAI announced recently.

Giving owners who wear every hat some leverage

OpenAI frames the program around the reality small business owners live in. With a lean team, limited time and few resources, one person ends up being the marketer, accountant, salesperson, operator and strategist all at once[1]. The craft is there; the hours to cover everything else are not.

The pitch is that AI can act as a force multiplier that extends individual expertise and puts world-class tools within reach of much smaller operations[1].

Handing out tools rarely changes behavior on its own, though. The heavy emphasis on training and worked examples in this program reads like an acknowledgment of that.

Four pillars

The announced program breaks into four parts[1].

First, hands-on virtual training. Product-specific webinars show how small businesses can use ChatGPT Work day to day, with demos, prompts to try, and automations across accounting, marketing, ecommerce and more. Partner webinars and Q&A sessions are also planned.

Second, in-person small business AI academies. The OpenAI Academy team meets owners across the US for guided instruction and hands-on exercises. The OpenAI Academy events listing shows sessions running from late July into August in places such as Monterey County, California and St. Louis, Missouri[2].

Third, new getting-started guides. These range from customer stories to interactive guides that can be uploaded directly into ChatGPT Work, plus short-form videos.

Fourth, agents and partners built for small business. Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian and Wix are among the named partners, offering skills tuned to common small business workflows alongside exclusive promotions[1]. Connecting to tools owners already use is the selling point.

Last year's events: 78 percent built a workflow in one day

The figures OpenAI cites come from last year's Small Business AI Jams. 78 percent of participants built a functional AI workflow in a single day, and 42 percent saved more than 5 hours a week[1]. OpenAI says it wants to repeat that this year.

These are self-reported numbers from event attendees, so they should not be generalized too far. Still, the fact that most participants shipped something during a full day of guided work is a meaningful contrast with programs that simply hand over access.

ChatGPT Work is the real centerpiece

The practical core of the program is ChatGPT Work, positioned as an agent that completes multi-step tasks and can carry complex projects end to end[1]. It connects to a business's files and applications and holds memory of how the owner thinks, writes and works.

The use cases OpenAI lists are squarely aimed at small operations. Send a free-flowing voice note and have it turned into a concise Slack message posted to several channels at once. Start each week with a page that updates in real time with market mentions, competitor performance and product trends. Have it evaluate current inventory and suggest new products or marketing campaigns. Build a project from customer reviews across locations and turn it into a training presentation[1].

Work that used to be outsourced, deferred, or absorbed into an owner's already long list of roles is exactly what OpenAI expects the agent to pick up[1].

Powered by GPT-5.6, available on every plan

ChatGPT Work runs on GPT-5.6, which OpenAI describes as its most advanced model available to businesses of any size and on all subscription plans[1]. Small businesses can therefore reach the latest models and the most capable agents, and pick the level of intelligence that fits the task to balance quality, speed and cost.

Enterprise-grade technology at an accessible price is not a new line. But explicitly refusing to gate the model tier behind higher plans matters in practice, because for a lean team the monthly difference often decides whether AI gets adopted at all.

OpenAI also says it will collect feedback through webinar Q&As, local events and surveys, and feed it into the product roadmap[1]. Since the in-person events are US-centric, businesses outside the US will mostly benefit from the online webinars and published guides.

Summary

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for small business, delivered through four pillars: virtual training, in-person academies across the US, getting-started guides, and partner-built skills and promotions. The centerpiece is ChatGPT Work, running on GPT-5.6 and available regardless of subscription plan. With 78 percent of participants at last year's events building a workflow in a single day, the program leans more on teaching people to use the tools than on the tools themselves.
