ASUS JAPAN began taking domestic pre-orders on September 17 for the ROG XBOX Ally X20, a handheld gaming PC created to mark the 20th anniversary of its ROG gaming brand. The device goes on sale October 16, with the standalone unit priced at ¥258,800. A ROG XBOX Ally X20 Bundle that adds the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses and a set of protective cases is also available at ¥442,800. This is the first Ally model with an OLED display, which grows to 7.4 inches, and the sticks, D-pad, and other controls have been redesigned from the ground up.
The anniversary model comes in translucent black and gold
The ROG XBOX Ally X20 builds on the ROG Xbox Ally X, the 2025 model developed together with Microsoft's Xbox team, and replaces its display, controller section, and exterior. The chassis is a translucent black that shows the circuit board and fan inside, with gold accents applied to the fan and other components. On the front, the joystick rings light up in gold and the Xbox button glows green. A gold 20th-anniversary badge sits on the back.
ASUS is rolling out a matching black-and-gold lineup called ROG Edition 20, and the Ally X20 sits at its center. The looks are deliberately loud for an anniversary piece, but the internals carry over the top configuration of the current generation, so it works as a daily driver and not only as a collector's item.
First OLED in the series, with slimmer bezels making room for 7.4 inches
The display is a 7.4-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and 0.2ms response time. The previous ROG Xbox Ally X used a 7-inch LCD; by trimming the top bezel by about 60 percent, ASUS enlarged the screen while keeping the body size essentially unchanged. The panel meets ASUS's own ROG Nebula HDR standard, with peak HDR brightness of 1,400 nits and 600 nits in SDR. It carries VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification and supports Dolby Vision.
Variable refresh rate is handled by FreeSync Premium Pro across a 30Hz to 120Hz range. The cover glass is Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, paired with the anti-reflective Gorilla Glass DXC treatment, which ASUS says cuts ambient reflections by 65 percent. The design clearly targets visibility outdoors and in bright rooms, which is welcome news for anyone who plays on the train or outside.
TMR sticks and a D-pad that switches modes with a pull and a twist
The controls received the most attention from user feedback. The analog sticks now use magnetic TMR sensors. Because input is detected without physical contact, drift (phantom input when nothing is touched) is far less likely, and the dead zone has been narrowed to 3 percent. A new algorithm also removes unintended snapping toward the four cardinal directions. ASUS says power consumption in the stick section is down by more than 70 percent compared with the previous model.
The D-pad is now a transforming design. Changing the input layout used to require swapping parts, but on the Ally X20 you simply pull the D-pad up and rotate it to switch between a four-way layout for retro games and an eight-way layout for fighting games. Being able to do this on the spot with no tools is a real convenience for players who move between genres.
The ABXY buttons have been reshaped to eliminate finger catch and actuate at about 90g. The grips use rubber with an embossed ROG texture, aimed at a feel close to an Xbox controller. The bumpers and triggers have also been revised.

Cooling was reworked as well: fin volume in the heatsink is up about 11 percent over the previous model and airflow improves by about 20 percent, according to ASUS. A dust filter on the intake keeps debris out. The power button doubles as a Windows Hello fingerprint sensor, which makes switching accounts easier when the device is shared within a family.
On boot, the device enters Xbox mode automatically for a console-like experience. Holding the Xbox button on the left side brings up background apps for quick switching, while finer settings live in Armoury Crate SE. An Xbox Game Pass entitlement is included.

The Bundle adds 171-inch-equivalent AR glasses and a Pelican case
The ¥442,800 Bundle includes the following accessories alongside the handheld.
- ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20: gaming AR glasses finished in the anniversary black and gold. Two 1080p Micro-OLED displays run at 240Hz and project a virtual screen equivalent to 171 inches at 4 meters, powered over a single USB-C cable from the handheld
- dbrand Killswitch: a protective case with stand, a travel hard cover, a skin, and ROG-branded thumbstick freeks
- ROG x Pelican Protector Case: a MIL-spec hard case with the 20th-anniversary badge and red latches, sized to hold the entire set
The price gap between the Bundle and the standalone unit is ¥184,000. The ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses are reported to launch separately on October 16 at ¥119,980. A separate 6-in-1 docking station, the ROG Bulwark Dock DG310, connects an external monitor, keyboard, and other peripherals over a single USB Type-C cable and is due in late October at ¥19,980.
Retailers and hands-on display
Pre-orders are open at the official ASUS Store and at Amazon.co.jp, Edion, K's Denki, Kojima, Joshin, Sofmap, PC Koubou, Bic Camera, Yamada Denki, and Yodobashi Camera. The device is on display at the ROG booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held at Makuhari Messe from September 17 to 21, giving visitors a chance to try it before launch.
At its Japan launch event, ASUS said the Ally series has become the top-selling handheld PC in Japan. Three years after the original ROG Ally arrived in 2023, this model addresses the two requests users have raised most often, an OLED screen and better controls, in a single update.
