Mozilla, the developer of Firefox, announced a partnership with the French AI company Mistral AI on September 16 (U.S. time). Under the deal, Mistral's open model "Mistral Small 4" becomes a selectable AI model in the beta of Firefox's AI browsing feature, Smart Window. At the same time, Smart Window expands beyond North America for the first time, reaching users in France with official French-language support. The update puts into practice Mozilla's stated position that the AI built into a browser should not be locked to a single large company.
What Changes
First, Smart Window beta users in the U.S. and Canada will see Mistral Small 4 added to the list of AI models they can choose from. Smart Window was designed from the start around choosing among multiple AI models, and adding Mistral does not remove the others. Mozilla says users in every region where Smart Window is available can continue to pick from several models.
The second pillar is the expansion to France. Until now, Smart Window had been offered only in English in the U.S. and Canada. France becomes the first market outside North America, and the feature can now be tried in French. According to Mistral, France and North America come first, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later this year. Mozilla has also said it plans further European expansion during 2026.
Mozilla says Mistral Small 4 was selected after evaluating its performance in the Smart Window beta, and that multilingual performance was one of the deciding factors. Rather than adapting an English-first experience to other languages afterward, the two companies share the view that multilingual and multicultural tuning should be treated as a core feature of the model.
What Smart Window Is
Smart Window is a Firefox window dedicated to AI features, sitting alongside the regular and private windows. It first appeared in November 2025 as an early concept called "AI Window," and was reshaped into its current form in August 2026 after incorporating how beta users actually worked with it and what they said.
What it does is help you pick up a task where you left off, using context you choose to share, such as open tabs and recent browsing history. The August update added, through a partnership with the search engine Exa, the ability to check current web information along with its sources without jumping to a separate search results page. Other features include suggested groups for related tabs, detection and one-click closing of duplicate tabs, and visual previews for looking back through your history. The goal is to make it easier to resume work such as planning a trip or comparing products, which tends to sprawl across dozens of tabs and many interruptions.
Smart Window is optional. Users decide whether to use it, what browsing context to hand over, and which AI model to use. Firefox's AI Controls also let you switch the feature off entirely. With AI being added to browsers at a rapid pace across the industry, keeping this "you can turn it off" design feels very much in character for Firefox.
What Kind of Model Mistral Small 4 Is
Mistral Small 4 is an open-weight model that Mistral AI released on March 16, 2026. It is licensed under Apache 2.0, and the model can be downloaded from Hugging Face and run in your own environment.
The architecture is a Mixture of Experts (MoE) with 128 experts, of which 4 are active per token. It has 119 billion total parameters, while only 6 billion (8 billion including the embedding and output layers) are actually used per token, a design that combines a large knowledge base with lightweight operation. The context window is 256K tokens, and it accepts both text and images as input.
Its distinguishing feature is that it consolidates capabilities Mistral had previously split across separate models: "Magistral" for reasoning, "Pixtral" for multimodal tasks, and "Devstral" for coding agents. The depth of reasoning can be switched with a parameter called "reasoning_effort," so the same model can answer light queries instantly and work through complex problems step by step. For uses like in-browser summarization and search assistance, where both response speed and multilingual support matter, it is a well-matched design.
How Privacy Is Handled
When AI is built into a browser, the question of where browsing content goes and how long it is kept naturally comes up. On this point, both companies state explicitly that Smart Window conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default, and that model partners such as Mistral have agreed to zero data retention.
Mistral AI has centered its business on enterprise offerings and promotes "sovereign AI" with an eye toward European data sovereignty. The company positions this partnership as an attempt to extend that philosophy beyond enterprises to everyday browser users.
What Both Companies Are Aiming For
Mozilla frames the partnership not as a mere product integration but as a statement about what a browser should be in the AI era. Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla Corporation, said that even as AI becomes part of how people experience the web every day, that should not mean people are chained to one company's self-serving pipeline. The browser, in his view, should not be a one-way funnel but a place where different AI providers compete and open source has a seat at the table.
Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral AI, described it as two open-source advocates working together to bring Mistral's research to Mozilla's users.
Behind this is a concern that a small number of closed-model companies are coming to control the browser, the search engine, the AI model, and the services that connect them all at once. Mistral can reach Firefox users without owning a browser, and Mozilla can integrate and recommend Mistral without taking away user choice. The two companies appear to want to present this relationship as a different form of AI competition from lock-in by the big players.
Mistral AI also recently completed a 3 billion euro (about 540 billion yen) funding round led by SAMSUNG in September and announced a strategic partnership with SAMSUNG in the semiconductor field. As the company strengthens its presence as a European AI player, gaining Firefox as a distribution channel is a significant move in terms of reaching general users.
