Redmi has launched its performance-focused smartphone, the Turbo 5, in India. The device first appeared in China earlier this year, and its defining feature is a large 7,540mAh battery packed into a compact body. A 7,540mAh battery in a compact body

The standout feature of the Turbo 5 is its large 7,540mAh battery. Most slim smartphones carry around 5,000mAh, so the Turbo 5 fits roughly 1.5 times that capacity into a body that is not especially thick. This is made possible by a newer battery material called silicon-carbon, which packs more capacity into a smaller volume than conventional lithium-ion cells, helping balance a slim chassis with long runtime.

Charging tops out at 100W over a wired connection, restoring the battery quickly. It also supports 27W wired reverse charging, so the phone can power earbuds or small devices through a cable. The brains of the phone is MediaTek's Dimensity 8500-Ultra. It is not a top-tier flagship chip, but as an upper-midrange part it handles everyday tasks and most games comfortably. As the Turbo name suggests, the phone is positioned to deliver speed while keeping the price in check.

Sustaining that performance comes down to thermal management, and the Turbo 5 uses a cooling system called 3D ice-loop. Inside sits a large 5,300mm2 vapor chamber, a heat-spreading plate that uses vapor to move heat away quickly, helping the phone hold its speed under prolonged heavy loads. The chipset pairs with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 4.1 storage, keeping app switching and data access brisk.

6.59-inch 1.5K OLED and a 50MP camera

The display is a 6.59-inch OLED panel with 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches up to 3,500 nits, making the screen easy to read even under harsh outdoor sunlight.

For photography, the phone leads with a 50MP Sony IMX882 main sensor paired with optical image stabilization (OIS). It is joined by an 8MP ultrawide in a dual-camera setup, while the front houses a 20MP selfie camera. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, so the camera layout itself is fairly standard, but OIS on the main sensor helps reduce blur in dim light and with moving subjects. RGB ring lights surround the camera module and can be used to signal notifications and incoming calls with light.

Long-term updates and well-rounded extras

The software is HyperOS 3, based on Android 16. Redmi promises 4 major OS updates and 6 years of security patches, which is reassuring for anyone who keeps a phone for the long haul.

The body uses a metal frame and includes an in-display fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers, and an infrared sensor. The infrared sensor can double as a remote control for devices such as TVs and air conditioners. Water and dust resistance meets the top-tier IP69K rating, withstanding high-temperature, high-pressure water jets. The phone comes in three colors: Asphalt Black, Nitro Blue, and Turbo White.
