HONOR will unveil the Robot Phone, a smartphone with a mechanical gimbal that rises out of the top edge of the body, on August 12, 2026. Camera specifications came to light at an imaging technology briefing held in Hengdian, Zhejiang, China, on July 28. The company has mounted a 200MP main sensor on the gimbal and partnered with cinema camera maker ARRI on color science, an unusually bold configuration.

A 4DoF Mechanical Gimbal That Retracts Into the Body

The defining feature of the Robot Phone is the titanium alloy gimbal module built into the top edge of the device. It moves across 4 degrees of freedom and retracts completely into the chassis when not in use. HONOR describes it as one of the smallest 4DoF mechanical gimbals in the industry. It deploys in 0.8 seconds and supports 360-degree rotational tracking.

The gimbal motor weighs just 2.6 grams. HONOR carried over the miniaturization and durability engineering it developed for foldables, and only that reduction in size made it possible to fit the mechanism within a phone-sized chassis. More than 100 patents are said to be tied to the system.

Stabilization performance is rated at CIPA 5.5 stops on the mechanical side. Unlike electronic stabilization, the lens itself physically tilts to cancel out shake, so no field of view is sacrificed. That matters most when walking while filming or chasing a moving subject.

Why Put a 200MP Sensor on a Gimbal

There are 3 cameras. The main unit is a 1/1.28-inch 200MP sensor at f/1.6 with a 23mm equivalent focal length, and this is the one mounted on the gimbal. Alongside it sit a 50MP ultra-wide and a 1/1.4-inch 200MP periscope telephoto at f/2.6. A 200MP telephoto is close to unheard of on current smartphones.

Pairing a high-resolution sensor with a gimbal makes sense. Cropping into the center of the frame still leaves resolution to spare, which makes it easier to produce stabilized, cropped footage. Push-ins and pull-outs in video become possible without worrying about image degradation.

Processing runs on an in-house imaging chip called Yuguang H1. A separate sensing chip handles motion capture. The design logic is clear: before the gimbal can move intelligently, the phone has to understand how it and its subject are moving.

Tracking features are comprehensive. They include subject recognition, 6-axis motion recognition, motion prediction, automatic subject tracking, and a double-tap gesture to switch the tracked subject. For camera movement, 6 modes are available, including default, super stable, pitch FPV lock, FPV vertical, and rotation.

ARRI Brings Cinema Color to the Phone

The second pillar is the ARRI collaboration. ARRI is a German manufacturer with more than a century of history in motion picture cameras, and HONOR announced a technical partnership with the company on March 1, 2026. The Robot Phone is the first product where that work shows up as concrete features.

Supported formats include ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3, and ARRI Looks. LogC3 records with reduced contrast on the assumption that color will be graded afterward, and it is a standard in professional production. Once LogC3 is available on a phone, footage can be matched to material shot on ARRI cameras using the same workflow.

Manual controls for focus lock, white balance lock, and exposure lock are also included. The emphasis is less on straight-out-of-camera beauty than on capturing material intended for editing.

August 12, the Same Day as Pixel 11

The Robot Phone was first shown at MWC 2026 in March 2026, and roughly 5 months later it reaches its formal launch. On HONOR's Chinese website, reservations backed by a 500 yuan (about 12,000 yen) deposit of intent are already open. The retail price has not been disclosed.

※1 CNY = about 23.7 JPY (as of July 31, 2026)

The chip is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, listed on HONOR's Chinese reservation page. Two configurations are offered: 12GB + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB. Availability is expected to center on China at first, with no word on Japan or other regions.

August 12 also happens to be the date of Made by Google, where Google will show the Pixel 11 series. Two very different visions of what a smartphone camera should be will land on the same day.

Summary

The HONOR Robot Phone combines a retractable 4DoF mechanical gimbal carrying a 200MP main camera with a 200MP periscope telephoto. Support for ARRI LogC3 and Looks gives it a character distinct from conventional smartphones, aimed at people who edit their footage. Pricing and market availability wait on the August 12 announcement.
