OpenAI has brought Google Drive into ChatGPT's Library. With the Drive plugin connected, files and folders from My Drive appear in Library and can be pulled into a conversation without uploading them again. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can also stay open beside the chat, so their contents remain visible while ChatGPT summarizes or compares them.
No More Re-Uploading
Until now, getting a cloud file in front of ChatGPT usually meant downloading it first and attaching it, or pointing at the same file over and over. With this change, any account that has the Drive plugin connected will see Drive files and folders listed the moment Library opens. That includes files owned by the user and files shared with them directly.
There are two ways to bring a file in: through the composer menu by way of Library, or by typing an @mention that narrows the list down to Drive. Either way the file itself stays in Drive rather than piling up as copies inside ChatGPT, and the original is one step away whenever it needs to be reopened.
Chat and Document on the Same Screen
The centerpiece of the update is the ability to keep a file open next to the conversation. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are supported, with the contents on one side of the screen and the chat on the other. Summarizing a document, analyzing figures, lining up several files to spot differences, and drafting something new from the material can all happen without switching tabs.
Selection is not limited to individual files. A folder can be chosen so that ChatGPT works across everything inside it, which is a more practical approach than naming files one by one when dozens of similar documents have accumulated in one place.
Writing back is supported, but not unconditionally. ChatGPT updates the original file directly only where the action is supported and where the user has authorized it, so the line between reading a file and letting the model rewrite it stays in the user's hands.
Six Plans on the Web, Mobile Undated
The rollout covers Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Business, all on the web, and works under both the ChatGPT and Work toggles. Mobile support is described only as coming later, with no date attached.
The release is also staged rather than instant. An account on a covered plan may not have the feature yet. If Drive items are missing from Library, the plugin connection is worth checking before waiting it out.
The first version carries a few limits. Coverage extends to My Drive and to files and folders shared directly with the user, but Shared Drives are not included. For teams that keep their working material in a Shared Drive, that gap will shape how useful the feature feels in practice.
Not every Drive editing and collaboration feature has come along either. A file opened beside the chat is there to be read and referenced, not to replace the Docs, Sheets, or Slides editor. Detailed formatting and collaborative editing still belong in Google's own apps.
Summary
Google Drive is now part of ChatGPT's Library, so Drive files and folders can enter a conversation without being re-uploaded. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can stay open beside the chat, and folder-level work is supported. The feature covers the web versions of Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Business, with mobile to follow. Two points are worth noting before adopting it: Shared Drives are not covered yet, and writing back depends on both feature support and user authorization.
