Xiaomi has unveiled the Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 22.5W, its first product to meet China's new mandatory safety standard for portable chargers. It went on sale across all channels in China on July 22, priced at 149 yuan (about 3,600 yen). The power bank offers a 20,000mAh capacity and a built-in cable, and Xiaomi is putting the tougher safety requirements it clears front and center.

Built to match China's new safety rules
The headline feature of this model is that it complies with China's incoming mandatory safety standard for power banks. The new national standard calls for stronger protection against high heat, overcharging, and crushing than before, and it adds a test that checks for lithium buildup after repeated charge cycles. The goal is to lower the chance of internal short circuits even in batteries that have aged.
The standard comes with a grace period, and it does not become mandatory until April 1, 2027. By shipping a compliant product ahead of that deadline, Xiaomi is signaling an early emphasis on safety. The move comes as power bank fires and recalls have piled up in several countries and airlines have tightened rules on carrying them, raising overall attention to safety.
Passing needle-puncture and crush tests
According to Xiaomi, the product has cleared a demanding set of safety tests. These include a 4mm needle penetration test, exposure to a 135°C high-heat environment, an overcharge test at 1.3 times the normal voltage, a compression test using roughly 1.3 tons (14kN) of force, and an aging test that repeats 300 charge cycles to check for degradation and lithium plating. Xiaomi says the unit does not catch fire or explode even after going through these tests.
The safety focus also shows in the internal design. Rather than covering the 20,000mAh capacity with a single large cell, the power bank combines two 10,000mAh cells. Keeping the capacity per cell lower is thought to help spread out the risk of heat and faults.
20,000mAh, built-in cable, three ports, and battery status you can check
On the usability side, a USB Type-C cable is built into the top, so you can start charging without carrying a separate cable. The ports are arranged as "2C+1A," with two USB Type-C and one USB Type-A, all supporting up to 22.5W output. That layout is easy to handle when charging several devices at once.
It also includes smart management features. Connecting it by cable to a PC lets you trace information for each internal cell and the charging history, and check records of any abnormal charging. Making the battery status easier to grasp is meant to keep the unit safe to use over the long run. It comes in two colors, light grey and dark grey.
This product is based on the built-in-cable Xiaomi 20000 22.5W Power Bank (2026 model) that Xiaomi released in June. That model also sold for 149 yuan and featured a built-in cable and a 2C+1A port layout. The new model can be seen as that design with clear compliance to the new safety standard added on top.
Summary
The Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 22.5W is Xiaomi's first product to meet China's new power bank safety standard. It pairs a 20,000mAh capacity and a built-in-cable design with a 2C+1A three-port layout supporting up to 22.5W charging, while highlighting safety credentials proven through tough needle-puncture, crush, and overcharge tests. Priced at 149 yuan (about 3,600 yen), it went on sale in China on July 22. Emphasizing safety ahead of the standard becoming mandatory could become a useful benchmark for choosing a power bank going forward.
