On June 16, Microsoft announced new consumer versions of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, both powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X2 chips. The 13-inch Surface Pro starts at 1,499 USD (about 240,000 yen), while the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop starts at 1,599 USD (about 260,000 yen). The headline change is the NPU, which climbs to 80 TOPS, with gains in graphics performance and battery life to match. It is a refresh built squarely around on-device AI.

Snapdragon X2 pushes the NPU to 80 TOPS

The Surface Pro can be configured with either a 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or a 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite, and both include an NPU rated at 80 TOPS. That is nearly double the 45 TOPS found in Qualcomm's first-generation chips for Windows PCs.

An NPU is a dedicated processor that handles tasks like photo enhancement, transcription, and locally run generative AI without leaning on the CPU or GPU, all while sipping power. Windows' Copilot+ PC features require at least 40 TOPS, so 80 TOPS clears that bar comfortably. Microsoft describes a split model in which lighter work runs on the device's NPU while heavier workloads are offloaded to the cloud, letting tasks move fluidly between local and cloud resources.

Graphics gains differ by model. According to Microsoft, the Surface Pro is up to 53 percent faster than the previous generation, while the Surface Laptop improves by up to 58 percent. Local video playback reaches up to 15.5 hours on the Surface Pro, up from 14 hours. These are manufacturer figures, and real-world results vary with usage.

The 13-inch Surface Pro

The tablet-style Surface Pro sticks with a 13-inch screen and a base configuration of 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage, expandable to as much as 64GB of memory and 1TB of storage. An OLED display option remains available, but a model with 5G cellular connectivity is not offered this time.

Connectivity comes via two USB-C ports plus a Surface Connect port for charging, along with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The device comes in Platinum, Black, and Dune, and the optional Surface Pro Flex Keyboard (399.99 USD, about 65,000 yen) is now available in the new Dune color as well. In the US, buyers can get a standard keyboard for free with a purchase made between June 16 and June 30.

Surface Laptop in 13.8 and 15 inches, with a new Jade color

The clamshell Surface Laptop comes in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes. Chip and memory options largely mirror the Surface Pro, topping out at 64GB of memory. Storage starts at 512GB on the US 13.8-inch model and 256GB elsewhere, while the 15-inch model starts at 512GB in every market and tops out at 2TB.

Battery life holds at up to 20 hours of video playback on the 13.8-inch model, while the 15-inch model drops from 22 to 19 hours. In exchange, the 15-inch version adopts a sharper 3270 x 2180 (262 PPI) LCD. The front camera carries a DXOMARK rating, a nod to video-call quality. Ports include two USB-C, one USB-A, a Surface Connect port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, with a microSDXC card reader added on the 15-inch model. The 13.8-inch model gains a new Jade color. Pricing starts at 1,599 USD (about 260,000 yen) for the 13.8-inch and 1,699 USD (about 270,000 yen) for the 15-inch, with the 13.8-inch costing 100 USD more than before.

Business models with Snapdragon X2 arrive on July 14, with the Surface Pro for Business starting at 1,649.99 USD (about 270,000 yen).

NVIDIA RTX Spark models are coming later this year

Brett Ostrum, who leads Surface at Microsoft, said the company is investing across the entire range, from entry points to ultra-premium performance and from the enterprise to the individual maker. In keeping with that, Microsoft has previewed a Surface Laptop Ultra later this year powered by NVIDIA's new ARM-based RTX Spark chip.

The same chip will go into the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation aimed at AI developers who need sustained local compute. The picture that emerges is a clear division of labor: this Snapdragon X2 generation covers the broad, mainstream price tiers, while heavier AI work falls to the higher-end models.
