AYANEO, the Chinese gaming-device maker, has teased that it will formally unveil the Pocket Micro 2, a palm-sized retro-oriented handheld, on June 26. As the successor to the current Pocket Micro, it is said to add a video-capable USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microphone. Here is what we know so far about a device that is already drawing attention from fans of small handhelds ahead of its launch.

A June 26 Reveal, and a Direct Successor to the Current Model

Earlier this month, AYANEO confirmed it was developing a successor to the Pocket Micro, its smallest handheld, and announced that it would be called the Pocket Micro 2. According to a post on the company's official X (formerly Twitter) account, the formal reveal is scheduled for June 26. It remains unclear, however, whether the device will be available to buy that day or whether the date marks only an announcement, with the actual release coming later.

The current Pocket Micro, with its pocketable size and tall display, was built for retro-style play reminiscent of classic handhelds. The Pocket Micro 2 inherits that character while overhauling what is inside.

Three New Features, and a "Full-Function" USB-C

AYANEO has highlighted three features that the previous model lacked.

The first is a revamped USB Type-C port. On the current model, the USB-C port handled only charging and data transfer, but on the Pocket Micro 2 it is described as a "full-function" USB-C port. That wording suggests support for sending video out to an external display, raising the prospect of connecting the small device to a TV or monitor for big-screen play.

The second and third are a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microphone, neither of which appeared on the current Pocket Micro. In the released image, these sit along the bottom of the body, with the headphone jack and microphone placed on the left, flanking the USB-C port. Being able to plug in wired earphones directly, along with microphone support for voice chat, should broaden everyday use.

A Snapdragon Chip and a Larger 3,950mAh Battery

The internals are getting a boost as well. The processor is said to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip more powerful than the MediaTek Helio G99 in the current model. Exactly which Snapdragon it will be has not been disclosed as of this writing.

Battery capacity grows to 3,950mAh. That is generous for a palm-sized device and should help ease the "runs out quickly" frustration common to small handhelds. AYANEO also says the grip and controls have been reworked, pointing to better comfort during longer sessions.

Price, Display, and Release Date Still to Come

Much of the key information, however, remains under wraps. The display size and resolution, the price, and the actual on-sale timing all await the formal announcement on June 26.

For reference, the current Pocket Micro sells for about 240 USD (about 39,000 yen) on Amazon. Whether the Pocket Micro 2 lands near that level or costs more to reflect its upgraded hardware is something to confirm as more details emerge.

Summary

The AYANEO Pocket Micro 2 is a successor that brings modern touches — a video-capable USB-C port, a headphone jack and microphone, a more powerful Snapdragon chip, and a 3,950mAh battery — to a retro-minded small handheld. The formal reveal is set for June 26, and once the remaining details such as price and display are filled in, its place in the market will come into sharper focus. Anyone who wants to play casually, and at length, on a tiny device may find it worth following the news.
