Alibaba's Qwen team has released a preview of its next flagship, Qwen3.8-Max-Preview. The model carries 2.4 trillion total parameters and is the first Qwen multimodal system above the 1 trillion mark. The preview is already purchasable, but no benchmark table, model card, or license has been published alongside it.
Announced in Shanghai, Two Days After Kimi K3
The preview went live on July 19, 2026, during the World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. Two days earlier, Moonshot AI had released Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter open-weight model. Two Chinese research teams shipped trillion-scale flagships within days of each other.
The Qwen account described Qwen3.8 as one of the most powerful models available today and comparable to leading frontier systems. It also said the model would go open-weight soon. No release date or license terms were given, and given that Alibaba has kept its Max tier closed until now, following through would mark a change in direction.
Text, Images, Video, and Documents in One Model
Qwen developer Shuai Bai supplied the technical detail. According to him, Qwen3.8 is the team's first multimodal model above 1 trillion parameters, handling images, video, and documents in addition to text.
The stated strengths are coding, full-stack development, data analysis, and office workflows, all of which the team expects to improve on the previous Qwen3.7-Max. Access to the preview runs through Alibaba's Token Plan subscription, offered at 10 percent of standard pricing.
How to Read the Second Only to Fable 5 Claim
The research team said that among the systems it benchmarked, Qwen3.8 was second only to Fable 5. That framing deserves care. The ranking is a vendor claim, and the supporting benchmark results have not been published. The same applies to the model card and the license, so there is nothing yet for third parties to reproduce under identical conditions.
A preview shipping as a working product and a performance claim being verifiable are two separate things. What is solid right now is the 2.4 trillion total parameter count, the multimodal support, and the way the model is being distributed.
Active Parameters Matter More Than the Headline Number
There is a second caveat about the numbers. Total parameter count is not the amount of compute actually engaged per token, and Qwen's own back catalog makes the point. Qwen3-235B-A22B holds 235 billion parameters but activates 22 billion per token, while Qwen3-30B-A3B activates roughly 3 billion. Both are sparse Mixture of Experts designs, and the Max tier follows the same approach.
For Qwen3.8, the active parameter count has not been disclosed. Without it, 2.4 trillion says very little about serving cost. For reference, holding 2.4 trillion parameters at 4-bit precision requires roughly 1.2 terabytes for the weights alone. A single NVIDIA H200 carries 141 gigabytes, so even eight of them fall short.
Developers Are Asking Whether They Can Run It
Community reaction converged on exactly that point. On Hacker News, an open-weight race between Chinese labs was broadly welcomed, though many read the timing as a direct answer to Kimi K3. A smaller group questioned the ranking claim and characterized Qwen as a benchmark-oriented team.
On Reddit's r/LocalLLaMA the discussion was more practical, centering on the 1.2 terabyte problem and on hopes for a smaller or distilled variant that a workstation could load. The announcement trended on X as well, with the same question underneath.
What matters next, in other words, is not leaderboard position. It is whether Alibaba ships a variant with a lower active parameter count, a usable quantized checkpoint, or a distilled sibling.
Summary
Qwen3.8-Max-Preview arrived on July 19 with 2.4 trillion total parameters, the first Qwen multimodal model above 1 trillion. It handles text, images, video, and documents, and is said to improve on the previous generation in coding and office work. At the same time, the benchmark table, model card, and license remain unpublished, and the active parameter count is unknown. Open weights are promised soon but undated. A settled assessment will have to wait for verifiable material and for a variant that can actually be run locally.
