The SE badge may be returning to Huawei's nova line after a long absence. A leak out of China lays out a full spec sheet for a handset called the nova 16 SE: an 8,500mAh battery, a flat 1.5K OLED panel, and Huawei's own Kirin 8020. With pricing said to land between 2,000 and 3,000 yuan, it would be an unusually aggressive package for a mid-range phone.

A dormant branch of the nova family

Huawei has not shipped a nova SE model since the nova 12 SE arrived in 2024. That leaves a gap of four generations on paper, and plenty of people assumed the sub-line had quietly been retired. The new leak says the nova 16 SE fills that gap.

The SE label usually marks a derivative that borrows from a higher-end design while cutting the price. Judging by the leaked specs, the nova 16 SE mostly follows that pattern. The battery is the one figure that breaks the mould for this price bracket.

Several sources also point to an early August unveiling in China. Huawei tends to keep launch timing under wraps until close to the event, so that date, like everything else here, awaits official confirmation.

An 8,500mAh battery paired with the Kirin 8020

The battery is the headline. The leak puts capacity at 8,500mAh, well clear of the 4,500mAh to 5,500mAh typical of a phone in the six-inch class. Chinese vendors have spent the past year adopting silicon-blended anode materials to raise capacity per unit of volume, and the nova 16 SE figure makes more sense read as part of that shift.

Processing duties fall to the Kirin 8020. Huawei's in-house 8-series Kirin sits a tier below the flagship 9-series, aimed at everyday use, photography, and lighter gaming. Combined with a battery this large, the phone looks positioned to sell on endurance above all else.

Display, camera, and design

The panel is described as a flat LTPS OLED at 1.5K resolution. A flat front makes screen protectors and cases easier to fit and reduces accidental edge touches. After a period when curved glass served as a premium signifier, flat designs have become the norm again in the Chinese market.

For imaging, a 50-megapixel rear sensor takes the lead, paired with a multispectral sensor Huawei calls Red Maple. Multispectral sensors measure light beyond the range the human eye registers, which helps the phone estimate a subject's true colours more accurately. Huawei introduced the arrangement on higher-end models first, and it now appears to be reaching the mid-range.

On the outside, the leak describes a gradient finish on the rear panel, and notes that the overall shape resembles the Honor Power 2. Black, white, blue, and orange are listed as the colour options.

Pricing, and a second phone in the same leak

Pricing is expected to sit between 2,000 and 3,000 yuan, roughly 48,000 to 72,000 yen. That bracket is fiercely contested in China, where several brands compete on the balance between performance and price. An 8,500mAh battery is an easy point of differentiation in that fight.

※1 CNY = 24 JPY

The same leak mentions a second device, a new Enjoy-series handset positioned above the Enjoy 90 Pro Max. It is said to carry a flat 6.84-inch LTPS OLED at 1.5K resolution, a 50-megapixel main camera, an 8-series Kirin chip, and a 10,000mAh battery, which would exceed even the nova 16 SE. Its retail name has not been settled, so that one remains a wait-and-see prospect.

Summary

The nova 16 SE is described as the phone that revives a nova SE line dormant for more than two years. The leaked configuration covers an 8,500mAh battery, a flat 1.5K OLED, the Kirin 8020, and a 50-megapixel camera backed by a Red Maple sensor, with pricing between 2,000 and 3,000 yuan. All of this remains at the leak stage, with no official announcement from Huawei. For anyone who ranks battery life above everything else, it is worth following.
