GMKtec released the G5S, an ultra-compact desktop, on August 12. The chassis measures 72mm on a side and weighs about 206 grams. It comes in black, green and light blue, with a cherry blossom pink joining the lineup in late August. Rather than chasing the newest silicon, GMKtec fitted a Celeron N5095 and spent the savings on price and placement flexibility.
72mm Square, 206 Grams, Small Enough to Hold in One Hand
The G5S measures roughly 72 (W) × 72 (D) × 44.5 (H) mm and weighs about 206 grams. It is smaller than a paperback, and it barely registers when parked at the foot of a monitor or in the corner of a TV stand. VESA mounting is supported, so bolting it to the back of a display makes it disappear from the desk entirely.
Noise, the usual weakness of a chassis this small, has been addressed with a cooling system that pairs a copper heat pipe with a quiet fan. GMKtec says optimized internal airflow keeps operating noise under 30dB. The case also includes a security lock slot, which points to fixed installations such as retail POS terminals and digital signage.
An Older CPU, Chosen Deliberately to Hold the Price Down
The processor is an Intel Celeron N5095: 4 cores, 4 threads, up to 2.90GHz, and a Jasper Lake generation part that is plainly not current silicon. GMKtec does not hide this. The company frames the older CPU as the reason the price could be held where it is.
The intended workload matches that decision. Document work in office suites, web browsing, online classes, video calls and media playback are the target; video editing and demanding games were never part of the plan. Power draw is quoted at around 10W, which makes the G5S easy to leave running as an always-on secondary machine or a shared household terminal.
Windows 11 Pro comes preinstalled. Entry-priced small form factor machines often ship with the Home edition, so this matters to anyone who wants to use the G5S as a remote desktop host.
Memory Is Fixed at 8GB, but Storage Scales to 8TB
Memory is 8GB of LPDDR4 at 2400MT/s, soldered to the board and not upgradable later. That is a limit buyers need to accept before purchase.
Storage is the flexible half. The unit ships with a 128GB M.2 2242 SSD on a Serial ATA connection, but the slot itself accepts both Serial ATA and PCI Express 3.0 drives at capacities up to 8TB. A 128GB volume fills up quickly once Windows updates accumulate, so it is worth treating a swap as part of the initial setup. A microSD card slot is provided separately.
Two Display Outputs, and Power Over USB Type-C
Video output consists of two HDMI 2.0 ports supporting a dual display setup at up to 4K and 60fps. Driving two 4K 60Hz panels from an entry class machine is genuinely useful.
The remaining ports are three USB 3.2 Standard-A connectors, an audio jack and a wired LAN port rated for 1Gbps. Wireless covers Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.
Power delivery is the interesting part. The G5S draws power through a USB Type-C connector, so a lost or failed AC adapter can be replaced by any USB PD supply capable of 36W (12V / 3A) or more. Taking the machine somewhere else means the charger already in your bag will do. Note that this Type-C port handles power only and carries no data.
Priced at 36,999 Yen, or 33,999 Yen With a Coupon
Amazon.co.jp lists the G5S at 36,999 yen, dropping to 33,999 yen once the coupon is applied. GMKtec's own store quotes 229.99 USD (about 37,000 yen), putting the Japanese street price essentially in line with the global one.
Exchange rate: 1 USD = 159 JPY
Given the N5095 inside, whether that price reads as cheap depends on the job. Measured purely on performance per yen, products built around a newer N series chip win some of those comparisons. What the spec sheet does not capture is the 72mm, 206 gram footprint, the choice of colors and the flexibility of Type-C power. For anyone trying to clear a desk, or deploying several units for signage duty, those are the reasons to pick this one.
Summary
The GMKtec G5S packs a Celeron N5095, 8GB of memory and a 128GB SSD into a 72mm square, 206 gram chassis. Two HDMI 2.0 ports drive dual 4K 60fps output, and power arrives over USB Type-C. It sells in Japan for 36,999 yen, or 33,999 yen with the coupon. This is not a machine that competes on performance, but if placement, quiet operation and appearance come first, the configuration makes sense. The cherry blossom pink model is due in late August.
