A higher-spec version of the repairable Dutch handset appears to be on the way. Retail listings point to a Fairphone 6+ with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, a meaningful step up from the 8GB in the current Fairphone 6. The colour line-up shifts as well, with Cobalt Blue joining the range.

From 8GB to 12GB, a bold move for a deliberately slow brand

The listings were spotted by a Dutch mobile news site, which found three separate Fairphone 6+ entries. All three carried the same 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which suggests the entries represent colour variants rather than different memory or storage tiers.

The current Fairphone 6 shipped in a single configuration with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Adding 4GB looks modest on paper. But Fairphone does not refresh its line-up annually the way most Android makers do, and it designs each model to stay on sale for years. Raising memory by half in the middle of a generation is a bigger commitment for a company built around that approach.

The timing also matters. Memory prices have been climbing through 2026 as server demand for generative AI pushes up DRAM procurement costs, and several phone makers have already adjusted their retail pricing in response. Increasing capacity in that environment makes it unlikely the 6+ will hold the current price. The Fairphone 6 launched at 599 EUR (about 111,000 yen), but there is no indication yet of what the 6+ will cost.

White drops out, Cobalt Blue steps in

Three colours are listed, with Cobalt Blue as the newcomer. The other two, Horizon Black and Forest Green, carry over from the current model, while the existing Cloud White option is absent from the listings.

Because Fairphone builds its phones around replaceable parts, including the rear panel, a colour change is not purely a merchandising decision. Owners who buy these phones expecting to keep them for years will want to know what happens to stock and spare parts for discontinued finishes. Fairphone has not commented on that.

The Fairphone 6 underneath

The Fairphone 6 was announced in June 2025. It runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, with a 6.31-inch OLED panel that reaches 120Hz. The camera set-up pairs a 50MP main sensor with a 13MP ultrawide, plus a 32MP front camera.

The real story with this phone is its construction rather than its performance. The body is held together with standard screws, and major components such as the display and cameras are designed to be swapped out by the owner. The 4415mAh battery is removable, and a 30W charger takes it to 50 percent in about 22 minutes. More than 50 percent of the materials by weight are fair-trade certified or recycled, the body is rated IP55, hardware warranty runs five years, and software updates are promised through 2033. Storage is 256GB, expandable by microSD up to 2TB.

That makes the Fairphone 6+ a variant that adds memory on top of a chassis designed to last eight years. The longer a phone stays in service, the more memory its operating system and apps tend to demand, so extra headroom fits a device sold on the length of its support window.

No timeline for an official announcement

Fairphone has said nothing about the 6+ so far. Listings appearing in retail systems suggest distribution preparations are under way, but neither the release date nor the price should be treated as confirmed.

Fairphone sells mainly across Europe and has no official distribution in Japan. Even if the 6+ arrives, buying one from Japan would mean importing it individually, and regulatory certification for domestic wireless use remains a hurdle for anyone considering it as a daily driver.

Summary

The Fairphone 6+ is expected to arrive as a higher-spec version with 12GB of RAM and a new Cobalt Blue finish. Raising capacity while memory prices keep rising fits a brand that promises eight years of updates. Price and release date remain unannounced, and official availability in Japan looks unlikely.
