Elecom will release an external portable SSD that combines a USB Type-C and a USB-A connector in a single body in late July[1]. Its defining feature is that you can plug it straight into anything from a smartphone to a PC without a conversion adapter, and it supports USB 10Gbps transfer speeds. The drive bundles CyberLink's AI photo editing software PhotoDirector and can also store PlayStation 5 game data.

USB-A and USB Type-C in One, No Adapter Required

The clearest feature of this product is that it carries two connector types, USB-A and USB Type-C, one on each end[1]. The USB-A side has a removable cap, while the USB Type-C side uses a rotating flip cap that you cannot lose. You simply expose whichever side you need and plug it in.

This means it connects not only to conventional PCs with a USB-A port, but also to Macs, iPhones, iPads, and other smartphones and tablets that have a USB Type-C port, without any separate conversion cable or adapter[2]. Because a single unit works regardless of the port on the device at hand, it is easy to handle when carrying data across multiple devices.

USB 10Gbps Transfer and PS5 Support

For performance, Elecom cites read speeds of up to 550MB/s and write speeds of up to 500MB/s[2]. It uses the USB 10Gbps (USB3.2 Gen2) standard and is also backward compatible with USB3.2 (Gen1), USB3.0, and USB2.0, so it can be connected directly even in environments without a matching port.

The drive records data to flash memory and has no physical moving parts like a hard disk. As a result, it offers the usual SSD advantages of being resistant to shock and vibration, quiet in operation, and low in power consumption. The body measures roughly 66 x 18 x 8mm and weighs about 27g, keeping it as compact as a USB flash drive[2]. It also includes a strap hole and an LED lamp that indicates access status.

For gaming, the drive is verified to work with the PlayStation 5, letting you store game data on the external SSD to free up space on the internal storage[1]. Note, however, that when used with the PlayStation 5 this applies only to playing PlayStation 4 titles, and you cannot launch PlayStation 5 game data directly from the external SSD.

Bundled AI Photo Editor, Backup, and Security Features

On the software side, the drive comes with CyberLink's AI photo editing software PhotoDirector (Windows version)[1]. Beyond basic adjustments such as brightness and color, you can use AI-based correction and image generation, editing photos saved to the SSD directly. The supported OS is Windows 11.

For iPhone and iPad users, the drive supports Extorage Plus, an app that makes it easy to back up photos and videos. It includes an incremental backup function that saves only new photos and videos from the second time onward, and it is free to use[2]. Note that it supports iPhones and iPads equipped with a USB Type-C port.

For security, you can use PASS, a password auto-authentication tool available from Elecom's website. Once you set a password on up to three designated PCs, you can skip entry from the second time onward, while connecting to an unregistered PC prompts for the password, preventing data leaks in the event of theft or loss[2]. It works on both Windows and Mac.

Three Capacities, All at Open Price

The lineup comes in three capacities, 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB (1,000GB), all in gray and all at an open price[1]. The model numbers are ESD-EPD0250GGY for 250GB, ESD-EPD0500GGY for 500GB, and ESD-EPD1000GGY for 1TB, with a one-year warranty. It is also a product certified under Elecom's THINK ECOLOGY environmental program, using outer packaging designed to improve shipping efficiency.

Summary

Elecom's new portable SSD packs a lot into a single device: the flexibility of a 2-way USB-A and USB Type-C connector that plugs into almost any device, USB 10Gbps transfer speeds, bundled AI photo editing software, PlayStation 5 support, and iPhone backup and security software. With its roughly 27g portability and a choice of three capacities, it looks like a versatile drive well suited to carrying data back and forth between smartphones and PCs.
