On September 1, OpenAI said its advertising business inside ChatGPT had reached a $1 billion (about 160 billion yen) annualized revenue run rate, less than 200 days after launch. The company is also widening self-serve buying through Ads Manager into India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. A third revenue pillar, alongside subscriptions and enterprise sales, is standing up faster than expected.

How to read the $1 billion figure

The first thing to note is that the $1 billion is not money already collected. It is a run rate, current monthly ad revenue extrapolated across a full year, which is a different thing from cumulative sales. Run rates project the momentum of a strong month forward, so they tend to flatter fast-growing businesses.

Even so, reaching that level in under 200 days is quick. Tens of thousands of advertisers are now on the platform, and it is available in more than 40 countries. Ads appear for users on the Free and Go tiers and not on the higher paid plans. OpenAI frames advertising as a way to support access to ChatGPT, which it describes as the funding source that keeps a service with more than 1 billion weekly users free to use.

Selling context rather than keywords

Advertising works on ChatGPT largely because users arrive with a stated purpose. They are comparing software, planning a trip, or trying to learn something. The intent is written down, which makes it easier to place a relevant product alongside it.

OpenAI says its system can use the context of the ongoing conversation to select relevant ads. Depending on the country and the user's settings, it may also draw on information from the wider ChatGPT experience. At the same time, the company stresses that ads are clearly labeled and kept separate from the answers, that advertisers cannot see private conversations, and that the presence of advertising does not shape the responses the model generates.

Those boundaries will face harder scrutiny the more the business grows. Once the neutrality of an answer is in doubt, the value of ChatGPT as something people consult starts to erode.

The machinery of a performance ad platform

The delivery side is also moving from experiment toward a conventional performance channel. Most campaigns now run on cost-per-click or outcome-optimized bidding, and OpenAI has added tools for measurement, targeting and conversion tracking. That makes it easier for agencies and adtech vendors to bring existing practices over.

The turning point came in May, when Ads Manager opened to a broader set of advertisers. Small and midsized businesses now account for what OpenAI calls a material share of the business. An ad business built on large brands and agency relationships reaches a very different market than one where anyone can buy from a dashboard. The expansion into India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa extends that self-serve experience sideways.

OpenAI has also assembled more than 50 technology and measurement partners. Opening campaign design, conversion data integration and performance verification to outside firms is what turns ChatGPT into a channel agencies can actually operate.

Targets of $2.5 billion this year and $100 billion by 2030

OpenAI has told investors it expects $2.5 billion (about 400 billion yen) in advertising revenue this year and is aiming for $100 billion (about 16 trillion yen) by 2030. The $1 billion run rate is treated as a waypoint.

For the next phase, the company points to more markets, additional ad formats, a wider range of campaign objectives and buying options, and stronger measurement tools. It also says it is exploring ways for businesses to interact with consumers more naturally inside ChatGPT. The direction is toward making the conversation itself the point of contact rather than simply lining up ad slots.

The tension with users grows as monetization advances. Is the advertising there to keep a generous free tier available, or is the free tier there to carry advertising? How that ordering is perceived depends on how ads are presented and how good the answers stay. What decides the fate of this business is less how fast OpenAI can sell inventory than whether people keep trusting the answers those ads sit next to.

Summary

ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, and self-serve buying through Ads Manager now extends to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Tens of thousands of advertisers across more than 40 countries is not a small footprint. But a run rate embeds expectations about the future, and the distance to $2.5 billion this year and $100 billion by 2030 remains long. The open question is how far OpenAI can grow advertising as the funding base for its free tier without spending the trust attached to its answers.
