ASUS has started selling the ZenScreen Duo MB14FCD, a foldable portable display, in Canada. Two 14-inch IPS panels are joined by a hinge that opens like a book, creating a workspace equivalent to a 21-inch screen. The unit weighs 1.2kg and costs 499 CAD (about 58,000 yen). The monitor was already available on Amazon in the United States, so this Canadian release widens its North American reach.
A 21-inch workspace that folds down to 14 inches
The MB14FCD uses two IPS panels running at 1920×1200 with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The refresh rate is 60Hz and response time is 5ms (GTG), with 100 percent sRGB coverage, 350 nits of typical brightness and HDR10 support. Those numbers make the target clear: this is not a display built for gaming speed, but one aimed at office work, code editing and comparing documents side by side.
The hinge is the interesting part. It rotates a full 360 degrees, so the relationship between the two panels can be changed freely. Stack them vertically and they behave like one tall screen; fold them back to back and you carry a single 14-inch display. ASUS says the folded footprint is smaller than a sheet of A4 paper.
There is also attention to eye comfort. The panels carry TÜV Rheinland Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light certifications, which matter for a product designed around long working sessions.
Four modes for two panels
How the two panels behave can be switched four ways from the on-screen menu.
Split mode joins them into a single tall screen. Connected as an external display for a laptop, it lets you take in long code files, contracts or a list of video-call participants at a glance. Depending on the graphics settings of the connected laptop, it can also be recognised as a 1920×2400 vertical resolution.
Independent mode assigns a separate device to each panel, so you can run a laptop on one and a game console or a second PC on the other. Mirror mode shows the same content on both, and folding the unit into a 270-degree tent lets you explain something to a person sitting across the desk. Extend mode is the straightforward option that simply widens a laptop's desktop.
Screen orientation rotates automatically to match the physical position of the unit once the DisplayWidget Center software is installed. Not having to reopen a settings panel every time you switch to portrait matters on a device meant to be carried around.
Ports, stand and 1.2kg
Connectivity consists of two USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode and one mini-HDMI port. The USB Type-C side supports power pass-through, so plugging a power adapter into the display lets it feed power to a laptop while receiving video. Being able to combine power and video over a single cable is a practical difference for a device used away from the desk. Power draw peaks at 13W.
For placement, a fold-out kickstand is built into the body, and there is a standard 1/4-inch tripod thread. Because ordinary tripods and arms can be used directly, the screen can be suspended above a desk that lacks free space.
The unit weighs 1.2kg. That is light for a device carrying two 14-inch panels, but it is also close to the weight of a laptop, so the verdict changes depending on whether you carry it every day or only on business trips.
Where it sits next to the OLED model
ASUS also offers the ZenScreen Duo OLED MQ149CD, which keeps the same folding structure but swaps in OLED panels. The OLED model is the choice when colour reproduction and contrast come first; this IPS version balances price against practicality.
The MB14FCD sells for 499 CAD (about 58,000 yen) through the ASUS Store and Best Buy. Compared with carrying two separate portable monitors, it cuts down on cables and lets you move between one screen and two by simply opening or closing the hinge. How much that convenience is worth is what decides the purchase.
