On August 18 local time, Anthropic said it would keep the 50 percent increase to Claude Code weekly usage limits in place through August 31. The boost applies to paid subscribers. The company says it would like to make the change permanent, but it stopped short of committing, citing the possibility that capacity will be stretched.
Paid Plans Only, Running Through August 31
The boost covers Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise users. Their weekly usage allowance is calculated at 1.5 times the normal amount.
The program started on May 13 and was originally presented as a limited-time offer, which makes this at least the second extension. The fact that each extension only buys a few more weeks suggests Anthropic is making short-term calls based on whatever headroom it has rather than reworking the plans themselves.
Why It Cannot Commit
The interesting part is the note Anthropic attached to the announcement. The company said it wants to make the change permanent, then added that demand for AI models is high and capacity could be tight over the next few weeks. It also promised to keep users posted.
In other words, the desire to keep the boost running and the ability to keep it running are not lined up. Usage allowances are normally fixed as part of what a plan includes. When they expand and contract in multi-week increments, that says something about how tight the compute behind them is.
Tools like Claude Code, where an agent keeps working long after the initial instruction, make consumption harder to predict than plain chat usage. The more people who use them, the harder it becomes for the provider to forecast its own headroom.
Weekly Caps Arrived in the Summer of 2025
Weekly caps were not part of Claude from the start. Anthropic announced the mechanism in July 2025 and began enforcing it on August 28 that year. At the time it pointed to a small number of users running Claude Code around the clock, along with account sharing and resale that violated its usage policy.
Adjustments have continued since. On May 6, 2026, Anthropic permanently doubled the 5-hour allowance for Claude Code. The 50 percent weekly boost being extended now began a week after that. Over roughly a year, the company has swung from tightening limits to loosening them under conditions.
Competitors Are Part of the Calculation
The competitive picture for AI coding assistants helps explain the loosening. An OpenAI engineer said Codex passed 15 million users as of August 13. Given that weekly users stood at around 5 million in June, that is steep growth.
In this category, how much you can actually run matters nearly as much as how smart the model is. Since users move on as soon as the limits feel restrictive, there is a clear incentive to keep allowances generous even when it hurts. Talking about permanence while continuing to set expiration dates looks like that tension made visible.
Summary
The 50 percent increase to Claude Code weekly usage limits now runs through August 31, covering Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. Anthropic says it wants the change to be permanent but has flagged the possibility of tight capacity as demand grows, so what happens in September is undecided. If you have heavy work planned this month, building your schedule around the larger allowance gives you more room to move.
